The GLS is the full-size, three-row SUV above the GLE, with seven seats as standard. The current X167 generation debuted at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, and the facelifted version reached South Africa in early 2024.
Every local GLS uses a nine-speed automatic, 4MATIC all-wheel drive and 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. The line-up covers the six-cylinder turbodiesel GLS 450 d, the V8-powered GLS 580 and the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+, while the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is listed as a separate model.
The 2024 update brought a new grille, a new multifunction steering wheel and the latest MBUX software. Off-Road Mode uses the 360-degree camera to show a transparent-bonnet view of the ground ahead of the car. At the top of the range, the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 produces 450 kW and 850 Nm.
