The GLE is the large SUV between the GLC and the full-size GLS. The fourth-generation V167 was unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show and went on sale in 2019, and the facelifted version reached South Africa in October 2023.
That facelift launched locally with the four-cylinder GLE 300 d, the six-cylinder GLE 450 d, which replaced the GLE 400 d, and the six-cylinder petrol GLE 450. Recent South African listings centre on the GLE 450 d 4MATIC in Avantgarde and AMG Line trim, and a third row of seats is available.
Every local version has 4MATIC all-wheel drive, a nine-speed automatic and 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, which on the Mercedes-Benz models adds a brief boost of 15 kW and 200 Nm. Mercedes-AMG also sells the GLE 53 4MATIC+, powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.
