The G-Class is the long-running Mercedes-Benz off-roader. An update revealed in 2024 added 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance to the combustion models and brought MBUX infotainment with two 12.3-inch screens. The same year, Mercedes-Benz revealed the first fully electric version, the G 580 with EQ Technology.
The diesel G 450 d keeps a low-range transfer case and front, centre and rear differential locks, and drives through a nine-speed automatic. Petrol power comes from the Mercedes-AMG G 63, whose 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 also has mild-hybrid assistance from an integrated starter-generator.
The G 580 uses four electric motors, one at each wheel, plus a selectable low-range reduction for off-road work. It also adds G-TURN, which lets the vehicle turn almost on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces. Mercedes-Benz claims a range of up to 473 km for the electric model.
