The SL is the long-running Mercedes-Benz roadster, and the current R232 generation is sold under the Mercedes-AMG name. Revealed in October 2021, it swapped the folding metal roof used by its two predecessors for a fabric soft top and has 2+2 seating.

The SL 43 opened the local range in 2023 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that uses an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger and a 48-volt system, and it drives the rear wheels. The V8 SL 63 4MATIC+ followed in June 2025 with all-wheel drive, by which time the SL 43 had left the local configurator. Both use a nine-speed AMG multi-clutch transmission.

The Z-folding fabric roof opens or closes in about 15 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/h. In the SL 43, the 48-volt system also adds a 10 kW boost for short bursts, while the SL 63's V8 delivers its peak torque of 800 Nm from 2,500 to 4,500 r/min.

The South African range

  • SL 63 4MATIC+: 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol, 430 kW and 800 Nm, all-wheel drive
  • SL 43 (offered at the 2023 South African launch; check current availability with a dealer): 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol with electric turbocharger and mild hybrid, 280 kW and 480 Nm, rear-wheel drive

Good to know

  • The roof can be raised or lowered on the move at up to 60 km/h.
  • Both versions use a nine-speed AMG multi-clutch transmission rather than a torque-converter automatic.
  • Seating is 2+2, with two small rear seats behind the front pair.
