The A-Class is the compact five-door hatchback of the Mercedes-Benz family and the only hatchback the brand lists in South Africa. The current W177 generation was facelifted in 2023, and the updated car reached South Africa in mid-2023.

The local model is the A 200, which uses a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive. It is offered in Progressive and AMG Line trim, with the AMG Line package adding styling and equipment rather than more power. Mercedes-AMG A 35 and A 45 S versions are listed separately for buyers who want performance.

In March 2025 Mercedes-Benz said the A-Class would not be replaced, but chief executive Ola Källenius has since confirmed an entry-level successor on the new MMA platform. The current car stays in production in the meantime.
